The ceremonial cancellation of the postage stamp dedicated to the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation.

On October 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in Almaty, at 303 Baizakov Street, in the UN Plaza building, a ceremonial cancellation of a postage stamp dedicated to the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation was held, organized by the “Central Asian Regional Glaciological Centre (Category 2 under the auspices of UNESCO)” and UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty.
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Preservation. “Preserving glaciers is one of humanity’s most urgent tasks. These ancient ice formations are not merely frozen water – they are guardians of our planet’s climatic history, a source of life for billions, and sacred sites for many cultures. Their rapid disappearance is a stark reminder that we must act now,” stated Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO.
The observance of the International Year of Glacier Preservation will help expand knowledge of the role of glaciers, snow, and ice in the climate system and the water cycle, as well as the far-reaching consequences of rapid glacier melting.
Within the framework of the International Year of Glacier Preservation, the “Central Asian Regional Glaciological Centre (Category 2 under the auspices of UNESCO),” together with the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan and JSC «Kazpost», has prepared the issuance of a postage stamp dedicated to the theme “International Year of Glacier Preservation.”
The issuance of the commemorative postage stamp contributes to raising awareness about glacier preservation — a topic of great importance for environmental sustainability and economic stability, both in Kazakhstan and throughout the Central Asian region, where meltwater from snow and glaciers serves as the main source for the formation of water resources.
The ceremonial event dedicated to the release of the stamp was attended by representatives of the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty, JSC “Kazpost,” JSC “Institute of Geography and Water Security,” an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, LLP “Institute of Ionosphere,” RSE “Kazhydromet,” as well as representatives of higher educational institutions — the Sustainable Development Center of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management of Al-Farabi KazNU, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Geography of Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University — and members of the media.
