International Photo Exhibition “Walk of Water: Stories of Ice, Rivers, and Drought”

On June 4, 2025, the opening of the international photo exhibition “Walk of Water: Stories of Ice, Rivers, and Drought” took place at the A. Kasteyev State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The exhibition features 21 photo stories by authors from around the world, portraying water in all its diversity — from glaciers and rivers to droughts and vanishing water sources. These photographs convey not only the beauty but also the fragility of aquatic ecosystems in the context of climate change.

At the opening of the photo exhibition, speeches were delivered by the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty and UNESCO Representative to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, Mr. A.F. Piric; the Director of the “Central Asian Regional Glaciological Centre” Category 2 under the auspices of UNESCO, Mr. T.O. Balykbaev; the Director of the A. Kasteyev State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ms. G.M. Zhumabekova; and the Head of the Natural Sciences Unit at the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty.

The exhibition was organized by the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty in cooperation with OneWater and the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme. It is dedicated to the International Year of Glacier Preservation and the 50th anniversary of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme.
